Any advice on what to do about joint pain, particularly when sleeping (or trying to)?
Posted on December 05th, 2008 in Joint-Pain-Pregnancy
I’m not even that far along yet, only 14 weeks, but my joints are bothering me so much when I sleep that I have to switch sides every hour. I remember not sleeping later in my pregnancy with my last one, but it seems too early. I know this is normal, and was wondering if anyone found something that worked well for them.
The pain is mostly is my knees, but also a little in whichever elbow happens to be the side I’m laying on. I always sleep on my sides with a body pillow so any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Sheesh, i’m already peeing like a race horse all night so between that, the 2 yr old coming in to talk and my hubby snoring I’m lucky to get a few hours. lol…. and so it begins….again… lol.

The are many over the counter pain relievers to perhaps help your problem but before taking any medications you should consult your doctor. I seem to know what it is by not getting sleeping because of pain. I’ve have back problems for many years, whereby my doctor gives me pain killers and sleeping pills just so at night I can get to sleep in order to get up for work.

My OB has just referred me to a physical therapist who specializes in working with pregnant women because of the hip & pelvic pain I’ve been having. Talk to your doc about that.

I feel so sorry for you, considering you still have such a long way to go. I would try to take a warm bath (if you have the time) before bed. Try doing some relaxation techniques before bed time, and make sure you are exercising, if you aren’t already. A walk, a bath and relaxtion techniques may help. If you can keep up with all that with a two year old. Hang in there!

I found that sleeping on my back with a large pillow under my knees was not only comfortable but the knee and back pain was greatly reduced. I also rested the offending elbow (or other appendage) on a pillow, too. This takes a lot of pressure off of those sore joints. Also a hot bath or shower before getting into bed for the night helped to relax the tension in the joints and allowed for more restful sleep.
Good luck and I hope this advice helps.
